Pileated Woodpecker

These Woodpeckers
can make short work
of a small tree. If the
tree doesn't come down,
it will certenly be ruined.
I cut this tree down some time
ago. Now it is right for insects,
and the wood peckers love it.

I captured these woodpeckers
early one morning making
a meal out of some insects
on the stump you see here.

The Pileated Woodpecker's
are beautiful.

Oh, they certainly are! I loved them in Wisconsin as a girl - don't get to see them here in Texas... You got some great shots!

This particular Pileated Woodpecker is not on the endangered species list.
the Ivory Billed, is on the endangered list. Recently some one saw the Ivory Billed in our area and it was published in the Savannah newspaper. People went nuts about it.
But they never verified it.
Thanks for your comment.

Just love those big ole pilated woodpeckers. It's so hard to get their photo because they like to be way up high in the pine trees.

Great to get this colorful fellow up close. We have a red-bellied woodpecker that tsaps away in the neighbor's pecan tree most afternoons, but I have never been able to capture a good closeup. Thanks for sharing.

Aren't they just the most beautiful little birds (not to the tree though!)! What hats they wear!
Thanks!
